Putrajaya, August 12, 2025 – Malaysia, Bangladesh, and other regional partners will dispatch a joint delegation to Myanmar in the coming weeks to promote peace and deliver humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Tuesday during a joint press briefing with Bangladesh’s interim head, Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Anwar, who chairs ASEAN this year, emphasized that securing peace in Myanmar is a top priority, alongside providing immediate humanitarian assistance to refugees and earthquake victims. “We are concerned with the burden placed on Bangladesh in hosting enormous numbers of Rohingya refugees,” he said, noting that Bangladesh shelters over 1 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee settlement.
The announcement came as part of a three-day visit by Professor Yunus to Malaysia, during which the two nations signed five agreements to enhance cooperation in defense, as well as the supply and infrastructure of liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum products, and related facilities. The agreements underscore the strengthening of bilateral ties between Malaysia and Bangladesh, with a shared commitment to addressing regional humanitarian challenges.
