Dhaka, August 12, 2025 – A high-level delegation comprising political leaders and civil society representatives from Europe and South Asia arrived in Dhaka today for a three-day visit aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation with South Asia. Organized by the South Asian Regional Office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), the delegation will engage with Bangladeshi politicians, business leaders, civil society actors, and regional organizations.
Dr. Carsten Klein, Regional Director of FNF South Asia, stated, “The visit seeks to deepen connections between Europe, particularly Germany, and South Asia, a dynamic growth region, while highlighting opportunities for mutual learning.” The Bangladesh visit is part of a broader South Asia study tour that includes India, Bhutan, and the Maldives.
The delegation includes prominent figures such as Ms. Sandra Weeser, Dr. Marcus Faber, Chairperson of the German Bundestag Defence Committee, Dr. Jürgen Martens, President of Deutsche Gruppe der Liberal International, and other notable leaders from German politics, economy, and civil society.
In Dhaka, the delegation will meet with Bangladesh’s Attorney General, NETZ Bangladesh, Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, the BIMSTEC Secretariat, and the Bangladesh-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BGCCI). A visit to a garment factory in Savar will provide insights into labor rights, industrial supply chains, and skilled-labor migration. Discussions with economic and media analysts will focus on regional security, media freedom, and policy reforms.
As the fastest-growing economy in South Asia and a key player in regional politics, Bangladesh is a strategic hub for connectivity and Bay of Bengal security. Its role as the host of organizations like BIMSTEC underscores its importance in advancing economic cooperation, political engagement, climate change initiatives, and Bangladesh-Germany relations.
The FNF South Asia organizes regular study tours to promote liberal democratic values and economic collaboration between South Asia, home to nearly two billion people, and Europe, recognizing the region’s growing political and economic significance.
