UN Human Rights Mission Begins Operations in Dhaka
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has officially launched a mission in Dhaka. This week, a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Government of Bangladesh and the UN Human Rights Office.On Friday (July 18), the UN Human Rights Office announced this development in a press release from Geneva. The agreement was signed by Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam on behalf of Bangladesh and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Volker Türk stated that the agreement sends a significant message of commitment to human rights and will support the implementation of recommendations from fact-finding reports. Additionally, it will enable the UN office to work at the grassroots level with the government, civil society, and other stakeholders in Bangladesh’s ongoing fundamental reforms. A senior official from the Foreign Ministry revealed that, although the agreement was not finalized through formal discussions, the Foreign Secretary signed it and sent it to Geneva. The three-year agreement can be renewed thereafter. The new mission will provide training and technical assistance to help the Bangladesh government fulfill its national and international human rights commitments and will work to enhance the capacity of relevant stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.
