UN Member States Urged to Pursue Accountability for Rohingya Genocide

In a separate development, Fortify Rights and 57 other organizations issued a joint statement on Monday, coinciding with Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day, urging UN member states to pursue accountability for the genocide and atrocities committed against the Rohingya in Rakhine State. The statement reflects on the Myanmar military’s 2017 “clearance operations,” which forced over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh following widespread massacres, rapes, and destruction.

The groups called for a UN Security Council referral of Myanmar’s situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure comprehensive accountability. They also urged nations to exercise universal jurisdiction to prosecute those responsible for international crimes. The statement highlighted ongoing persecution, including movement restrictions and aid blockages by the Myanmar junta, as well as abuses by the Arakan Army (AA), including arson, torture, and killings of Rohingya civilians. With the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar set for September 30, 2025, the groups emphasized the need for greater Rohingya representation, including women, youth, and diaspora voices, to address the crisis effectively. Both statements underscore the international community’s resolve to seek justice and sustainable solutions for the Rohingya, while supporting Bangladesh’s efforts to manage the humanitarian crisis.
