11 Nations Pledge Support for Bangladesh in Resolving Rohingya Crisis

Dhaka, August 25, 2025 – Eleven nations have expressed their commitment to stand by Bangladesh in addressing the ongoing Rohingya humanitarian crisis, as outlined in a joint statement issued by the French Embassy in Dhaka on its X and Facebook pages on Monday.

The statement, endorsed by the high commissions of Canada, Australia, the UK, and the embassies of Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, and India, highlights the international community’s concern over the plight of over 1.1 million Rohingya refugees currently displaced in Bangladesh. The statement marks the eighth anniversary of the Myanmar military’s actions that triggered the mass displacement of the Rohingya population.

The signatories acknowledged the “resilience of the Rohingya” amidst worsening security and humanitarian conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, as well as the “ongoing generosity” of Bangladesh’s Interim Government and its people for providing shelter and life-saving assistance to the refugees, including recent arrivals. However, the statement noted that ongoing violence and instability in Myanmar prevent the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya. “Conditions in Myanmar do not currently allow for their return,” the statement said, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and stable Myanmar to address the root causes of the displacement. The nations condemned the escalating violence and human rights abuses by the Myanmar military and other armed groups, calling for an immediate end to hostilities, the release of those unjustly detained, and unhindered humanitarian access. The 11 nations reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Bangladesh and the international community in seeking long-term solutions, including at the upcoming High-Level Conference in September 2025. They advocated for enhancing Rohingya self-reliance in light of declining humanitarian funding and supporting host communities in Cox’s Bazar. The statement also stressed the importance of inclusive representation for the Rohingya to ensure they can make empowered decisions and live with dignity while in Bangladesh.
“We stand steadfast with the Rohingya and Bangladesh, committed to seeking durable solutions to the crisis and addressing its root causes,” the statement concluded.
