Nepal Minister Hails July Uprising as Bangladesh’s Collective Will for Democracy

Kathmandu, August 6, 2025: Nepal’s Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung on Tuesday described Bangladesh’s July Mass Uprising as a “collective will of the people for democracy” and a movement driven by the country’s new generation. Speaking at an event hosted by the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu to observe ‘July Mass Uprising Day,’ Gurung emphasized Nepal’s strong support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

The minister highlighted the longstanding friendly ties between Bangladesh and Nepal, noting collaboration in trade, investment, tourism, ICT, and people-to-people connections. He stressed the need for new cooperative initiatives in an interconnected world.

The event, held with solemnity at the embassy premises, was attended by SAARC Secretary-General Md Golam Sarwar as a special guest, along with local civil society members, former Nepalese ambassadors to Bangladesh, prominent business leaders, doctors, professionals, and the Bangladeshi community. Representatives from regional organizations, including the SAARC Secretariat, ICIMOD, UNICEF, and various societies, also participated. The program began with the national anthems of Nepal and Bangladesh, followed by a minute of silence to honor the martyrs of the July Uprising. Messages from Bangladesh’s President and Chief Adviser were read out, and a documentary titled *July Anirban* was screened. In his speech, SAARC Secretary-General Sarwar called the uprising an unprecedented event in Bangladesh’s history, paying tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for economic and political freedom. Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman lauded the courage of the Gen-Z youth who rose against oppression and ended a fascist regime, restoring democracy. He also acknowledged the heroic role of expatriate Bangladeshis in the uprising. Describing the uprising as an opportunity, Ambassador Rahman urged stakeholders to support the interim government’s efforts to build a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh. The embassy noted that it is organizing a series of events as part of the ‘July Revival Ceremonies-2025’ to commemorate the uprising.
