Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi Commemorates First Anniversary of July Uprising

New Delhi, August 5, 2025: The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi marked the first anniversary of the July Uprising on Tuesday, which led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic government on August 5, 2024.

The event began with the reading of official messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, according to a press release. In his message, President Shahabuddin stressed the importance of "uprooting fascist roots" to fully realize the spirit of the July movement and build a "happy and prosperous Bangladesh." Chief Adviser Yunus emphasized that the sacrifices of the uprising would be meaningful only if Bangladesh is transformed into a "truly public welfare state."

Two documentaries highlighting the events of the July movement were screened during the program. Nabila Idris, a commissioner of the Commission of Enquiry on Enforced Disappearances, delivered a pre-recorded video message, sharing her experiences supporting student protesters on the frontlines. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, described the July Uprising as a “completely spontaneous” movement that laid the foundation for a new vision of Bangladesh. Faisal Mahmud, Minister (Press) at the High Commission, also addressed the gathering.
The commemoration, held at the mission’s Maitri Hall, was attended by Bangladeshi students from various educational institutions in India.
