Malaysian Minister Hails Yunus Visit as Turning Point for Bilateral Ties

Dhaka, August 15, 2025 – Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail has described the recent visit of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Prof Muhammad Yunus, to Malaysia as a “turning point” in strengthening ties between the two nations. In a statement shared on social media, the minister expressed his enthusiasm for the positive outcomes of the visit, which he believes will enhance multi-sector cooperation.

During the visit, Malaysia and Bangladesh signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and exchanged three Notes of Understanding. These agreements span critical areas such as defense, energy, halal industry, STEM, research, education, semiconductors, and the blue economy. Saifuddin emphasized that these agreements reflect a shared commitment to fostering a progressive and mutually beneficial future. A key highlight of the visit was the introduction of a Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) policy for Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia. This initiative allows legal workers to visit their families in Bangladesh and return to Malaysia without needing a new visa for each trip. Saifuddin noted that the policy underscores Malaysia’s appreciation for the significant contributions of Bangladeshi workers to its economy and society. “This step reflects Malaysia’s pioneering approach to managing foreign workers in a more inclusive and progressive manner,” he said. The minister also highlighted the strong foundation of mutual respect and trust underpinning Malaysia-Bangladesh relations. Discussions between Prof Yunus and Malaysia’s Prime Minister reaffirmed commitments to expand cooperation in trade, education, and workforce development, while exploring new sectors for collaboration. Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Saifuddin acknowledged Bangladesh’s critical role in managing the refugee issue and reaffirmed Malaysia’s support for diplomatic and multilateral efforts to address the situation in Myanmar. The Malaysian Home Ministry, responsible for domestic security and immigration, is committed to supporting ASEAN-led initiatives for sustainable solutions, including dialogue with stakeholders in Myanmar. Saifuddin emphasized that the strengthened diplomatic ties will deliver tangible benefits, including job opportunities, skill development, and joint economic progress. “With a strong foundation, Malaysia and Bangladesh are poised to advance as strategic partners, guided by mutual respect and shared prosperity,” he concluded.
