India Denies Bangladesh’s Allegations of Awami League Offices, Labels Claims ‘Unfounded

India has strongly rejected Bangladesh’s accusations that the outlawed Awami League is operating political offices on Indian soil, asserting that it has no knowledge of such activities and strictly prohibits political campaigns targeting foreign nations from its territory.

Addressing media questions on Wednesday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “The Government of India has no information regarding any anti-Bangladesh activities conducted by alleged Awami League members in India, nor any actions that violate Indian law. India does not permit its soil to be used for political activities against other countries.” He described the statement from Bangladesh’s interim government as “unfounded.”

The rebuttal followed a sharp protest from Dhaka, which called on New Delhi to shut down what it referred to as “alleged offices” of the Awami League in Delhi and Kolkata and to curb anti-Bangladesh activities by the party’s fugitive leaders. The interim government, established after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in the July 2024 uprising, cautioned that such activities could jeopardize bilateral relations. Dhaka claimed that senior Awami League figures, many charged with crimes against humanity, were engaging in political activities from India, including a recent public event at the Delhi Press Club. It labeled these alleged offices as “a clear violation of the sovereignty and sentiments of the Bangladeshi people and state.” India, however, underscored its position on Bangladesh’s political developments, with Jaiswal stating, “India continues to hope for the swift conduct of free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh to reflect the true will of its people.”
This diplomatic spat signals a rare strain in ties between the two neighboring countries, which have faced tensions since the collapse of Hasina’s government and the subsequent political transition in Dhaka.
