Dhaka, August 20, 2025 – The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka observed National Mujahid Day on Tuesday, honoring two pivotal events in Algeria’s struggle for independence: the North Constantine Offensive of August 20, 1955, and the Soummam Conference of August 20, 1956, according to a press release.
Celebrated annually on August 20, National Mujahid Day marks critical moments in the Algerian War of Independence that shaped the revolution and led to the nation’s liberation from French colonial rule. On August 20, 1955, the National Liberation Front (FLN) launched the North Constantine Offensive, a series of coordinated attacks targeting French military and economic installations in the Constantine region, including Collo, Skikda, and Constantine city. Despite fierce French reprisals that resulted in significant civilian casualties, the offensive unified Algerians and strengthened support for the FLN’s independence movement.
In its press release, the embassy highlighted the enduring significance of these events, stating, “As we reflect upon these historic events on National Mujahid Day, we honor the immense sacrifices made by those who fought for Algeria’s independence.” The embassy emphasized that the milestones of 1955 and 1956 symbolize the courage, unity, and resilience of the Algerian people in their quest for sovereignty.
