Dutch Envoy Praises Prof Yunus for Leading Bangladesh Through Transition

Dhaka, August 6, 2025: Outgoing Dutch Head of Mission André Carstens lauded Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus for his leadership in guiding Bangladesh through a transitional period following the ouster of the previous regime, during a farewell visit at the state guest house Jamuna on Wednesday.

Carstens, who has served as charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bangladesh since 2025, commended Yunus for fostering democratic reforms and national unity. “People will remember you,” he said, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Highlighting the recently announced “July Declaration,” Carstens described it as a pivotal step in bridging Bangladesh’s historical context with the aspirations of the July mass uprising. He also praised Yunus’ announcement of the election timeline as “perfect,” noting it sets a clear path toward general elections. The discussion also covered the ongoing Rohingya crisis and an upcoming international conference in September aimed at addressing the humanitarian and political challenges faced by Rohingya refugees. In a symbolic gesture, Carstens presented Yunus with lyrics he wrote celebrating the spirit of the July Uprising led by Bangladesh’s Gen-Z. Set to music originally composed by George Harrison for the song ‘Bangladesh,’ the lyrics were accompanied by a video shared during the meeting. Special Envoy to the Chief Adviser Lutfey Siddiqi and SDGs Affairs Principal Coordinator Lamiya Morshed were also present at the meeting.
