UN Human Rights Office Established in Bangladesh’s Interest, Says Foreign Affairs Adviser

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain stated that the establishment of the United Nations Human Rights Office in Dhaka was done in Bangladesh’s best interest, with the government retaining the option to withdraw the office with six months’ notice if necessary.

“I don’t believe such a situation will arise,” Hossain told journalists during a discussion at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday afternoon.

Addressing concerns raised by experts regarding the human rights office, Hossain noted that the agreement would be reviewed after two years. “We have taken this step prioritizing our national interests. We didn’t sign the agreement immediately after the UN’s proposal. We analyzed it thoroughly before proceeding. However, I fully respect the opinions of experts,” he said.

Responding to a question about China’s hydropower projects upstream of the Brahmaputra River, Hossain acknowledged that Bangladesh cannot prevent such projects but will remain vigilant to minimize any significant adverse impacts. “The sources of our rivers are not in Bangladesh. We must ensure these projects do not cause harmful effects or have very limited impact,” he added.
Hossain revealed that the Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka assured him that these projects are not designed for water diversion but for phased utilization, employing new technology to avoid disrupting water flow. “There is no need to panic,” he concluded.
