Bangladeshi High Commissioner Abida Islam Honored with ‘Women in Diplomacy’ Award in London

London, July 30, 2025 – Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Abida Islam, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Women in Diplomacy’ Award for her exceptional contributions to advancing women’s rights and gender equality in diplomacy. The award, under the category “Champion for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality,” was presented at a ceremony hosted by the Women in Diplomacy Secretariat at the Embassy of Mexico in London on Tuesday evening.

Mexican Ambassador to the UK and President of the Women in Diplomacy Network, Josefa González Blanco Ortiz Mena, handed over the award to High Commissioner Islam in the presence of approximately 50 women diplomats from various foreign missions. The accolade recognizes Islam’s steadfast advocacy for women’s empowerment and her commitment to gender-inclusive practices throughout her diplomatic career.

Islam’s leadership in promoting gender equality has been evident in her previous roles as Ambassador to South Korea and Mexico, as well as her current position in London. Since taking office in the UK, she has worked diligently to foster gender equality within the Bangladesh High Commission and among the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United Kingdom. A career diplomat, Abida Islam joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in November 1995 as part of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS). She has held significant roles in the foreign ministry in Dhaka, particularly in divisions focused on international relations.
The Women in Diplomacy Network, which hosted the event, is dedicated to promoting female participation in diplomacy and fostering professional networks among women diplomats worldwide.
