Vatican Delegation Led by Cardinal George Koovakad to Visit Dhaka for Weeklong Interfaith Mission

Dhaka, September 5, 2025: A high-level Vatican delegation, headed by Cardinal George Koovakad, prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, will arrive in Dhaka tomorrow for a weeklong visit aimed at fostering inter-faith dialogue and societal harmony in Bangladesh, according to foreign ministry officials.

During the visit, Cardinal Koovakad is expected to meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed. His itinerary includes engaging with journalists, students, teachers, interfaith leaders, and community representatives. He will visit key religious sites, including the Islamic Foundation, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, a Buddhist temple, and a Hindu temple in Dhaka.

Vatican embassy sources stated that Cardinal Koovakad will interact with Christian religious leaders and lead a prayer service for the Catholic community at Tejgaon Catholic Church. He will also deliver a keynote address titled “Promoting a Culture of Harmony” at an inter-religious dialogue event at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center. Indunil Janakaratne Kodithuwakku Kankanamalage, secretary of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, will deliver a message to the Bangladesh Muslim community during the visit. On September 11, Cardinal Koovakad will attend a reception at the Vatican embassy in Dhaka to mark the Pope’s feast.
The visit underscores the Vatican’s commitment to promoting peace and mutual understanding among diverse religious communities in Bangladesh.
