Brent Christensen Nominated as Next US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Tareq Md Ariful Islam Appointed as Bangladesh’s Envoy to US

Dhaka, September 5, 2025: US President Donald Trump has nominated Brent Christensen, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, as the next US Ambassador to Bangladesh, according to a White House statement. Christensen, from Virginia and holding the rank of Counselor, will assume the role of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary pending US Senate approval.

The US ambassadorial post in Dhaka has been vacant for over a year since former Ambassador Peter Haas resigned in mid-June 2024 after a three-year tenure. Since then, Helen LaFavre and Megan Bouldin, both deputy chiefs of the US mission, served as Chargé d’Affaires, with Tracey Ann Jacobson holding the role since January 11, 2025.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has appointed Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam, a seasoned diplomat, as its next ambassador to the United States. The position in Washington, DC, had been vacant since Ambassador Asad Alam Siam was appointed Foreign Secretary in June 2025. A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to UNB that Ambassador Tareq has relocated from Geneva to Washington, DC, to assume his new role. Tareq, who joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1998, previously served as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Geneva since June 2024, following his tenure as High Commissioner to Sri Lanka
Christensen brings extensive experience, having served as Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs at the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021 and as Bangladesh Country Officer earlier in his career. His nomination underscores the US commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Bangladesh.
