Norway and Bangladesh Partner with UN for Major Marine Survey in Bay of Bengal

Dhaka, August 22, 2025 – Norway, in collaboration with Bangladesh and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has launched a significant research initiative to explore the potential of Bangladesh’s blue economy. From August 21 to September 21, Norway’s advanced research vessel, RV Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, will conduct a month-long survey in the Bay of Bengal, focusing on sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and climate resilience.

The survey, undertaken in partnership with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), involves a team of 26 international and Bangladeshi scientists. They will collect critical data on fish stocks, plastic pollution, and the health of the marine ecosystem. These findings aim to inform evidence-based policies aligned with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

On August 19, a media briefing was held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in Dhaka. Farida Akhter, Advisor to the Ministry, joined Marianne Rabe Knævelsrud, Chargé d'affaires at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and Dr. Jiaoqun Shi, FAO Representative in Bangladesh, to discuss the survey’s objectives.
This collaborative effort underscores Norway’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in harnessing its marine resources sustainably. For more details, visit: https://www.thedailystar.net/business/news/bangladesh-launch-marine-survey-bay-3966171.
