Malaysia Agrees to Recruit Bangladeshi Workers Stranded by May 2024 Deadline

The Malaysian government has agreed to recruit a limited number of Bangladeshi workers who were unable to enter the country by the May 31, 2024 deadline, according to a statement from the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. The recruitment will be facilitated through the state-run Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL).

The High Commission announced this development in an amended notice issued on Friday, detailing the procedures and designated sectors for this special recruitment arrangement. The workers will be employed specifically in Malaysia’s construction and tourism sectors, with the process adhering to strict regulations to ensure transparency and proper documentation.

Previously, the High Commission issued a warning about fraudulent syndicates operating in the name of recruitment, particularly targeting jobseekers aspiring to work in Malaysia’s Sabah province. It clarified that no Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or bilateral agreement exists for recruiting Bangladeshi workers for Sabah, rendering such offers illegal. These fraudulent groups have been collecting passports and money from unsuspecting individuals with false promises of employment. The notice urged Bangladeshi jobseekers to remain vigilant and use only government-approved channels like BOESL for recruitment, emphasizing, “All jobseekers should exercise caution and strictly follow authorized processes to avoid falling victim to scams.”
