Japanese Ambassador SAIDA Attends Inauguration of GGHSP-Funded Medical Project in Dhaka

Dhaka, August 25, 2025 – Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, HE SAIDA Shinichi, attended the inauguration of “The Project for the Strengthening Medical System of Haematological Diseases for Children in Dhaka District” at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital & Institute (BSHI) on Monday. The initiative, funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP), aims to improve treatment for children with hematological disorders.

The project has equipped BSHI with a refrigerated centrifuge machine, a plasma storage freezer, and an automated aphaeresis machine. These devices will enable the hospital to provide blood component transfusions, a critical treatment that reduces complications like graft-versus-host disease for children with conditions such as blood cancer and thalassemia.

In Bangladesh, around 8,000 newborns are diagnosed with thalassemia annually, with many others suffering from blood cancers. Previously, BSHI relied on expensive blood components from private hospitals, making treatment unaffordable for many families and leaving at least 90 children without access to care each year. The new equipment is expected to benefit approximately 4,200 pediatric patients nationwide by providing affordable, life-saving transfusions. “I hope this project will significantly enhance the treatment of hematological diseases for children in Dhaka and throughout Bangladesh,” said Ambassador SAIDA.
Since 1989, Japan has supported 221 NGO projects through GGHSP, contributing approximately USD 17.5 million to enhance grassroots human security in Bangladesh.
