Sweden Bolsters Support for Bangladesh’s Legal Reform Efforts

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh (on 23 June 2025) and the Embassy of Sweden have signed a new agreement to advance people-centered justice reforms in Bangladesh, reinforcing their shared commitment to human rights, democratic governance, and the rule of law.

The agreement, signed on Monday, includes a contribution of 5 million SEK (Swedish Krona) from Sweden to support the next phase of the *Support to Transforming Bangladesh’s Rule of Law Services* project. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s justice system by promoting judicial independence, improving access to justice, and enhancing public trust. Ms. Maria Stridsman, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden, emphasized the importance of the partnership. “Through our longstanding collaboration with UNDP, Sweden is proud to help build a justice system that is inclusive, transparent, and accountable—one that serves all citizens and upholds fundamental rights,” she said. Key objectives of the project include promoting judicial independence and prosecutorial reform, improving access to justice for women, youth, and marginalized groups, enhancing digital justice services such as a national justice hotline, and fostering greater public confidence in the justice system. This collaboration aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16), which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions. The renewed partnership underscores the strong ties between Sweden and Bangladesh in their shared pursuit of a fair and equitable justice system. The initiative is expected to further empower vulnerable communities and strengthen Bangladesh’s legal framework, contributing to a more inclusive and just society.
