Japan Commits $4.8 Million to Support Free and Fair Elections in Bangladesh

The Government of Japan has pledged JPY 695 million (approximately USD 4.8 million) in electoral assistance to bolster free, fair, and inclusive national elections in Bangladesh. The commitment was formalized through an exchange of notes signed between Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on July 2 at the Election Commission Secretariat in Dhaka.

The grant will enhance the capacity of the Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC), promote civic and voter registration, and increase participation among underrepresented groups, including women, youth, and marginalized communities. It also aims to improve the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.

The signing ceremony was attended by Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Shinichi Saida, and UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative, Mr. Stefan Liller. Witnesses included Mr. Hideo Ishiizuki, Director-General of the International Cooperation Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. AMM Nasir Uddin, Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh. “Bangladesh stands at a pivotal moment in its democratic journey,” Ambassador Saida said during the ceremony. “With respect for Bangladesh’s ownership, Japan fully supports efforts to achieve a peaceful and democratic political transition through free, fair, and inclusive elections.” Mr. Liller expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, stating, “Japan’s generous contribution strengthens our shared goal of helping Bangladesh hold peaceful and credible elections that reflect the will of its people.”
As Bangladesh prepares for national elections expected by mid-2026, this initiative underscores Japan and UNDP’s commitment to supporting democratic governance and electoral integrity. The project aligns with Japan’s broader Strategic Partnership with Bangladesh and its focus on promoting peace, human security, and democratic development in the Indo-Pacific region.
