Dhaka Calls for Regional Cooperation to Tackle Climate Change Challenges

Dhaka, July 31, 2025 – Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Nepal, Md Shafiqur Rahman, has called for enhanced regional cooperation to address the escalating challenges posed by climate change and trans-boundary risks. Speaking during a courtesy visit to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the ambassador emphasized the importance of collaborative, science-based solutions to foster sustainable development and create new livelihood opportunities.

Invited by ICIMOD Director General Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, Ambassador Rahman highlighted the need for integrated “mountain-to-delta” approaches to sustainable development in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. He expressed Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting ICIMOD’s efforts to expand and diversify its operations, according to a statement from the Bangladesh Embassy in Nepal. During the visit, ICIMOD officials briefed the ambassador on the organization’s core activities and projects across the HKH region, which spans eight member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. They also presented details of ICIMOD’s initiatives in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region. Ambassador Rahman thanked ICIMOD for its role in promoting a greener, more inclusive, and climate-resilient development pathway. Founded in 1983 and based in Kathmandu, ICIMOD is a regional intergovernmental center focused on knowledge sharing and sustainable development in the HKH region.
The ambassador’s remarks underscore Bangladesh’s proactive stance in seeking regional partnerships to combat the growing impacts of climate change, which threaten livelihoods and ecosystems across South Asia.
