Dhaka, July 29, 2025 – Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen emphasized that the formation of a national government and the timing of national elections in Bangladesh are strictly internal matters of the country. Speaking at the “DCAB Talk” event organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club on Tuesday, July 29, he made these remarks in response to a question from the audience.
“Whether a national government is formed in Bangladesh or not is an internal matter. The timing of Bangladesh’s elections is also an internal matter,” Yao stated, reaffirming China’s policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations.
Addressing the United States’ recent tariff policies, Yao Wen expressed concerns about their impact on Bangladesh’s sovereignty and economic development. He noted that the US tariffs, which include a 35% charge on Bangladeshi products starting August 1, contradict the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and could destabilize the global economy. The ambassador expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to navigate these challenges and pledged China’s support to safeguard mutual interests through adherence to WTO rules.
On the proposed Teesta multipurpose project, Yao reiterated China’s readiness to implement the initiative for the conservation and management of the Teesta River. “China is fully prepared to implement the Teesta multipurpose project. The decision now lies with the Bangladesh government,” he said, highlighting China’s willingness to provide technical and financial assistance for the project.
Regarding trilateral cooperation between Bangladesh, China, and Pakistan, Yao Wen underscored China’s commitment to fostering collaborative ties with both nations. “Our goal is to build a developed, prosperous, and sovereign neighborhood. This initiative is not against any third party,” he clarified, noting that no South Asian country has formally raised concerns about the trilateral mechanism. He referenced the successful foreign secretary-level meeting held in Kunming, where the three countries agreed to enhance cooperation in 12 key sectors, including trade, education, and environmental protection.
The ambassador’s remarks reflect China’s ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral and regional ties with Bangladesh while supporting its development goals and sovereignty amidst global economic challenges.
