UK PM Keir Starmer Sends Condolence Letter Over Dhaka Plane Crash, Praises First Responders

Dhaka, August 7, 2025 – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sent a heartfelt condolence letter to Bangladesh following the tragic plane crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka on July 21, 2025. In the letter, dated July 30, addressed to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Starmer expressed deep sorrow over the “devastating” incident, which claimed at least 35 lives, including 32 students, and injured 173 others, many of them children.

“I am writing to express my heartfelt condolences to you, and to the people of Bangladesh,” Starmer wrote. “Please accept my deepest sympathies, and those of the British people.” He extended his support during what he described as a “time of national mourning” for Bangladesh.

Starmer also commended the bravery and swift response of the first responders and medical personnel at the crash site, stating that their efforts were “a testament to the resilience of the Bangladeshi people.” He expressed solidarity with the affected families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured and still receiving treatment in hospitals.
The crash, involving a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training jet, occurred in Dhaka’s Uttara neighborhood after a mechanical failure shortly after takeoff. The incident, one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Bangladesh in decades, prompted a national day of mourning on July 22, with flags flown at half-mast across the country.
