Indian High Commission Hosts ‘Nazrul Sandhya’ to Mark Poet’s 49th Death Anniversary

Dhaka, August 29, 2025 – The High Commission of India in Dhaka, through its cultural wing, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), hosted a captivating cultural evening titled “Nazrul Sandhya” on Thursday to commemorate the 49th death anniversary of Bangladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Held at the Indian Cultural Centre in Gulshan, the event attracted a diverse audience, including prominent artistes, cultural dignitaries, Nazrul scholars, youth delegates, and art enthusiasts, all gathered to honor the legacy of the revered Bidrohi Kobi (Rebel Poet). Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma addressed the gathering, highlighting the enduring legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam as “an icon of the shared cultural connection between India and Bangladesh.” Reflecting on Nazrul’s role in India’s freedom struggle, Verma noted, “His poems stirred a subjugated nation, awakened its soul, and inspired an entire country to break free from the chains of colonial oppression.” He described Nazrul as “an enduring symbol of youthfulness” whose message of equality and harmony continues to resonate globally, serving as “a lighthouse of our collective conscience.” In her welcome address, Ann Mary George, Director of IGCC, emphasized the deep cultural ties between India and Bangladesh. She underscored the IGCC’s role as a dynamic platform for cultural exchange and its commitment to celebrating literary and artistic figures like Nazrul, who have profoundly shaped the region’s shared heritage. The evening featured spellbinding performances by renowned Nazrul Sangeet artistes Dr. Chanda Chakraborty and Shahid Kabir Polash. Their renditions of Nazrul’s iconic works, from the revolutionary fervor of *Bidrohi* to the soulful beauty of his devotional and romantic compositions, captivated the audience, reaffirming the timeless relevance of Nazrul’s artistry.
