Bangladesh Embassy in Japan Launches National ID Service for Expatriates

Tokyo, August 23, 2025 – The Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo has launched a National ID (NID) service, enabling expatriate Bangladeshis in Japan to access vital identity documentation directly from the embassy. The initiative was inaugurated on Friday in the embassy’s hall by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission, Akhtar Ahmed.

Speaking as the chief guest, Ahmed highlighted the challenges faced by many Bangladeshi expatriates in Japan who lack national identity cards, which limits their access to essential services in Bangladesh. “With the launch of the NID program, expatriates can now obtain NID-related services conveniently at the embassy,” he said. He also announced plans to introduce postal voting for expatriate Bangladeshis in the next election, further facilitating their participation in national processes.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan, Md. Daud Ali, described the launch as the fulfillment of a long-standing demand of the Bangladeshi diaspora in Japan. The event was attended by Election Commission officials, members of the Bangladeshi community in Japan, and embassy staff. The initiative marks a significant step in supporting the estimated thousands of Bangladeshis living in Japan, ensuring easier access to critical services and civic rights.
