Bangladesh Delegation Attends Himalaya Parliamentarians’ Meet in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, August 17, 2025: A high-level Bangladesh delegation, led by Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma, arrived in Nepal on Sunday to participate in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) Parliamentarians’ Meet-2025, set to commence on Monday, August 18. The delegation includes prominent figures such as BNP Standing Committee member and former minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya, Senior Joint Member Secretary of National Citizen Party Dr. Tasnim Jara, and Joint Member Secretary Mir Arshadul Hoque.

The two-day event, supported by the United Kingdom International Development (UKID) through its Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), aims to foster dialogue, coordination, and knowledge-sharing among parliamentarians from HKH countries, including Nepal, India, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Pakistan. The meet seeks to address critical issues such as climate change, disaster risks, biodiversity loss, and pollution in the HKH region, which significantly impact ecosystems, natural resources, livelihoods, and human life.

Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel will attend as the chief guest, with Speaker Devraj Ghimire as the special guest. The inaugural session, starting at 9:30 AM local time, will feature Foreign Minister, Minister for Forest and Environment, ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho, and other dignitaries. Technical sessions will follow to discuss regional challenges and solutions. The HKH Parliamentarians’ Meet aims to sensitize parliamentarians to the socio-economic and ecological significance of the HKH region, enhance understanding of climate change and environmental challenges, and promote regional cooperation. It also seeks to empower parliamentarians to advocate for gender-equal, socially inclusive, and pro-climate policies while exploring the creation of a permanent HKH parliamentarians’ platform to address shared challenges collectively.
**Expected Outcomes:**
- Equip parliamentarians with knowledge to advocate for mountain issues at national, regional, and global levels.
- Support policies and legislation addressing climate, environment, and biodiversity priorities.
- Encourage the establishment of a regional platform for ongoing collaboration.
